Insurance company says Iowa is fourth most-likely state for a deer collision

mcpd-investigates-deer-shot-2012-12-27MASON CITY – Iowa is the fourth most-likely state for a deer collision, a big insurance company says.

State Farm says in a claims analysis that Iowa is ranked #4 out of the 50 states for deer collisions. There is a 1 in 68 chance of striking a deer while in a vehicle in Iowa.

However, Iowa was ranked #3 last year – so your odds are getting better.

The most-likely state to hit a deer is West Virginia. Minnesota is ranked #7.

State Farm says an estimated 1.3 million claims happened in the past year resulting from these collisions. They say there’s no silver bullet to keep large animals like deer, elk, and moose off highways and roads. Some drivers insist that deer whistles work, though the Information Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) says no scientific evidence supports that claim.

Studies and field tests show that roadside reflectors do reduce crash frequency somewhat, but as of now there’s no foolproof method to keep animals off our roads.

A deer collision repair to a vehicle can cost hundreds of dollars.
