Construction Certificate Program Coming to NIACC in June



MASON CITY – If you have an interest in construction, an Iowa community college has a program just for you.

In response to the regionally high demand for residential and commercial construction workers, North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) is now offering a 45 hour Fundamentals of Construction certificate program that will provide participants with the necessary skills to gain an entry level position with a residential or commercial contractor.

Through this process, participants will learn basic tool identification and usage, building components, site layout and preparation, floor systems, wall framing, ceiling framing, and roof framing. Additional skills to be learned will include shingling, siding installation, basic trim work, and door and window installation. Classroom training will include completion of the OSHA 10-Hour Safety for Construction course and basic blueprint reading. The main project for the class will be the construction of a utility building.

NIACC has a variety of programs available to provide tuition assistance to those who qualify. The Fundamentals of Construction program is scheduled to meet from 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, June 13th – 17th in the Buettner Careers Building on the NIACC campus. A tool belt with basic hand tools and personal protective equipment will be provided for all participants while enrolled in the course.
